Standards & Classifications

Each audit concludes in one of five technical classifications. The classification governs which public determination is issued; the registry records the standing of the credential.

The Society determines that a property is haunted only when the audit documents recurrent activity that ordinary and material conditions cannot explain. A certificate marked Certified Haunted records an extraordinary finding.

Classification of Findings

NH

No Haunting Established

No recurrent anomaly or evidence sufficient to establish a spectral or otherwise paranormal presence was documented under the conditions and during the period of examination.

Eligible forCertified Not Haunted

AH

Anthropogenic Haunting

The site sustains a socially produced haunting through folklore, expectation, ritual, presentation, or repeated acts of narration; the record did not establish a spectral or otherwise paranormal presence acting independently of those human causes.

Eligible forCertified Not Hauntedwith qualification

PH

Phenomenal Haunting

Recurrent anomalous phenomena were documented, but the record was insufficient to attribute them to an independent spectral agent.

Eligible forCertified Not Hauntedonly after review

SH

Spectral Haunting

The investigation produced a coherent pattern of evidence provisionally attributable to a discarnate or otherwise paranormal presence.

Eligible forCertified Hauntedafter secondary review

IU

Indeterminate / Under Continued Investigation

The evidence does not support a responsible binary determination, or material conditions require further examination.
